There is an absolute plethora of top down wave clearing shooters out there, so how does Hyperbolic Ignition stack up as a budget title? When you boot up the game you are treated to retro inspired looks. The game uses a bright pallet against the darkness of space, which makes it easy to differentiate between foes, bullets, and power ups. The sound feels right at home though the game features a single music track. Its not grating, but not noteworthy either. The controls, while not terrible, are mapped oddly and can take a bit to get used to. Z,x,c, and v are your weapons while you use the directional keys to move. It has an old school feel to it, but its alright and works for the game. You cannot change these controls, though you may use a controller.Gameplay wise its an Asteroids-like game. Waves of baddies come, you gotta shoot them down. Simple. Hyperbolic Ignition spices it up with a boss that spawns after a minute of two of blasting enemies. However, every stage is the same. You have a wrap-around arena with four warps at each corner. All the enemies do is pursue and fire. Rarely did I find myself actually facing the enemies, rather I would just lay mines to do all the dirty work. Its just not exciting if you're just flying about laying mines and waiting for a boss to spawn. Asteroids, the 1979 progenitor, is more exciting because you must fly, reposition, face the enemy, and dodge constantly. And that you can find on a thousand different websites for free that people made on their free time. Hyperbolic Ignition also has some programming to smooth out- the screen shakes and the enemies get confused when you fly from one corner and wrap around the opposite. While the enemies change from stage to stage, they are all just feel the same but faster- further driving home the whole mining process rather than shooting. You also slow down if you don't hold down the trust, which again, further supports running around and mining your foes to death. Yawn. It's not worth ten bucks. Maybe a dollar. Not ten. If you like games like Sinistar, Subspace\/Continuum, Asteroids, Geometry Wars, this pales to even to free versions out there of such games. You can find better on Steam. Avoid.
